The doorway idea

A Great Portal exists because finding the right tool online became harder than using it. Search results are bought, review sites are gamed, and directories grew into auto-generated dumps where a listing means nothing. In 2014 a small research team decided to build the opposite: a single doorway where every entry had been opened, tested, and written up by a human being before it earned a place on the page.

What we curate

The portal indexes tens of thousands of tools, services, and resources across software, agencies, learning, and everyday work — each listing carrying what it does, who it is for, what it costs, and how it compares to its closest alternatives. Ranking criteria are published in plain language and re-applied on a fixed cycle: every entry is re-verified at least every two weeks, dead links are pulled the day they are found, and nothing enters the index through paid placement. If a listing says it, we checked it.

How people use it

Professionals arrive with a job to be done — choose a CRM, find a fulfilment partner, pick a course — and leave with a short, defensible shortlist instead of twenty open tabs. Teams use the comparison views in procurement decisions; freelancers use the category guides to pick their stack; writers use the vetted listings as a research base. The directory is free to browse, sustained by clearly labelled sponsorships that never affect rank order.

  • Every listing opened and vetted by a human editor before publication
  • Re-verification on a fixed two-week cycle; dead entries pulled same day
  • Ranking criteria published in plain language, never for sale

A Great Portal remains, deliberately, a small editorial operation with a librarian's standards. If you want curated discovery, transparent rankings, and a resource directory you can cite without embarrassment, you have found the right doorway.
